The brief for a gallery with apartments located on
the same site requires the juxtaposition of functions that, by their
nature, demand a different architectural response. In resolving this
duality, the gallery takes on a visually dominant and abstract character,
with the apartments separate and secondary in the streetscape composition.
Alongside, a new public piazza is set down by a half
level from the road relating to the restaurant, and overlooked by the
gallery entrance.
The Gallery's collection consists of works at small
to intermediate scale by Cypriot artists. In considering how to display
the collection, it seems appropriate to arrange the gallery as a sequence
of intimate rooms on a single floor to reflect the scale and nature
of the art. The temporary gallery is located on the first floor so that
it is accessed separately from the entrance to provide flexibility of
use.
