House overlooking the Downs
2012 - 2017
This contemporary family house, built in Green Belt, sits on a steeply sloping site on the North Downs and is carved from a simple white rendered cuboid to exploit the extraordinary panoramic views.
By building into the hill, the entrance to the house was raised up to street level, presenting a single storey linear elevation to the north. On entry, the hallway sits as a balcony overlooking the double height hall and gives a glimpse view over the landscape to the south. The stair leads down to a broad landing serving bedrooms in the west wing, a private stair up to the master bedroom suite and, with a final few broad steps, down to the main living level. The living space reveals the dramatic view through 12 metres of sliding glazing facing south. A canopy provides summer shading, leading out onto the terrace with steps up to an infinity pool.
