Grafenegg Castle is an historical monument in Lower Austria, some 70km west of Vienna with a reputation for fine classical music performed 'al-fresco'.The competition for the new hall was prompted by the need for a covered concert space that could be used in poor weather.

Our proposal was for a simple and robust concert hall box, set into the farmed landscape surrounding the Castle and accessed from within the grounds solely by means of a concealed underground link, leaving the copper stained concrete box enigmatically sitting in the strawberry fields like a memory from another era. The building's simple construction meets both the low budget and the proposed tight construction programme as well as the demands for first class acoustics.
